Special growth forms form small biotopes for numerous living beings

As habitat or habitat trees are trees designated, the special habitats ( biotopes , habitats offer) for other living things. These are often very old trees, some of which are already dying or dead. In particular, trees with woodpecker holes or with clumps of tree-breeding bird species, so-called eyrie trees , are among them. But also trees with special growth forms, with larger trunk or bark damage or with a high proportion of dead wood offer a habitat for many animals , plants or microorganisms .

Often these are trees that are not economically interesting due to their damage or growth deformation. In addition, trees are usually felled and recycled before they die. This eliminates the natural age and decay phase that occurs in primeval forests. For this reason, pronounced biotope trees are significantly less common in commercial forests than in natural forests . From the point of view of nature conservation , the lack of biotope trees must be counteracted. Since leaving and protecting such trees is a burden on business operations, public-sector forest owners in particular start programs to increase the proportion of biotope trees in the forest. These trees are left to their own devices and are not felled.

Germany

The Third National Forest Inventory (2012) found an average of 9 biotope trees per hectare in German forests . There are 93 million biotope trees in the entire German forest. 60 percent of them are deciduous trees.

The "Nature Conservation Guideline for the Hessian State Forest" from 2010, for example, specifies requirements for hardwood stands that are over 100 years old. Three habitat trees per hectare are to be preserved here.

The Lower Saxony State Forests have set themselves the goal of maintaining five habitat trees per hectare. The biotope tree and deadwood concept of the Rhineland-Palatinate municipal forest requires ten trees per hectare.

The state forest of Rhineland-Palatinate, however, rely on groups of biotopes. As a rule, the identification takes place in stocks of the maturity phase. A group of around 15 trees should be left for every three hectares.
