Life

Like his younger brothers, Birch Monroe grew up on his parents' farm in Rosine, Kentucky. As a young man he left Kentucky with Charlie and Bill and moved to Chicago , where they worked in an oil refinery. At the same time, the three brothers already appeared as The Monroe Brothers . A short time later they got an engagement with the WLS National Barn Dance , the most famous radio show at the time. However, when Bill and Charlie turned professionally into the music business, Birch got out.

After the Monroe Brothers split up in 1939, Birch played intermittently in Charlie's band, the Kentucky Partners . Monroe also played in the band of his other brother Bill, the Blue Grass Boys . During two sessions on September 17, 1946 and April 8, 1950, he worked in this group as a musician. Occasionally he also played the fiddle , bass or sang during performances . In the 1950s, Monroe began running the Brown County Jamboree . His brothers Bill and Charlie were also members of the show. Bill was to host his Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival there every year from 1969 , in which Birch was also involved.

Birch Monroe died on May 15, 1982. He was buried in Rosine Cemetery in his hometown and inducted into America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame in 2002.
