Birgit Abels

Birgit Abels (* 1980 in Witten ) is a German musicologist and university professor at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen .

Academic biography

Birgit Abels studied musicology, Arabic and Islamic studies in Bochum and London from 1999 to 2004 . Her doctorate, funded by the German National Academic Foundation , took place in 2007 with a thesis on the music of Palau . From 2006-2007 she worked for the Ministry of Culture and Communication of the Republic of Palau ; From 2007–2011 she worked at the International Institute for Asian Studies in Leiden and at the University of Amsterdam . In 2011 she was appointed full professor for ethnomusicology at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. She conducted fieldwork in Palau (2004, 2005–2007), North India (2003) and Malaysia (2008, 2009, 2010). Birgit Abels is editor-in-chief of the world of music magazine .
