Birgitta Englund Dimitrova

Birgitta Englund Dimitrova (* 1946 ) is a Swedish linguist . She teaches and researches as Professor Emerita for Interpreting and Translation at the Tolkoch översättarinstitutet (Institute for Interpreting and Translation) at Stockholm University .

Live and act

After completing her dissertation in 1977, Birgitta Englund Dimitrova initially worked as a Bulgarian language teacher at Stockholm University from 1978 to 1983. In 1983 she taught Macedonian at Uppsala University and in 1985 Bulgarian at Oslo University . From 1986 to 1994 she worked as a lecturer in the field of bilingualism , translation and interpreting at Stockholm University, and from 1992 she taught as an associate professor in the same subject. Since 2006 she has been a full professor at the Institute for Interpreting and Translation at Stockholm University. In 2013 she retired, but is still active in research and teaching.

Birgitta Englund Dimitrova is a member of the Translation Committee and the Doctoral Studies Committee of the European Society for Translation Studies (EST). She is also a member of the advisory boards and committees of various publications in the field of translatology, for example the mTm Translation journal.

In 2013 she was awarded the Artur Lundkvist Prize in Bulgaria for her longstanding service in developing relations between Sweden and Bulgaria in the fields of science and culture, as well as literary translations from Bulgarian into Swedish.

In addition to her native Swedish, Birgitta Englund Dimitrova speaks fluent Bulgarian, English and Russian and can communicate well in Spanish, German, French and Macedonian.

research

Birgitta Englund Dimitrova wrote her dissertation with the title Yes / no-questions in Bulgarian and Macedonian: Form while still in the field of Slavic Studies , especially contrastive linguistics with a focus on syntax . From the mid-1980s, her research focus shifted increasingly to the field of translation and interpreting. Her main areas of interest include:

  • process-oriented studies in translation studies
  • cognitive aspects of the translation or interpreting process
  • Translation of dialect as a rhetorical stylistic device in fiction
  • Interaction in situations accompanied by interpreters such as doctor-patient discussions
  • Research methods in translation and interpreting
