Birra Melotti

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Birra Melotti (also Birra Asmara ) was the first brewery in Eritrea . It was founded by Luigi Melotti in Asmara in 1939, when the area was part of Italian East Africa . The brewery also had a glassworks for the production of bottles and, in addition to beer, the production of spirits. The Villa Melotti left his wife Emma, who came in 1940 to Eritrea, on to the 19th century uninhabited island Taulud at Massawa build. Melotti died shortly after his brother in 1946 when they were both ambushed by armed gangs. After his death the business was continued by his wife and son.

The brewery was nationalized by the Derg during the Eritrean War of Independence and was then taken over by the Eritrean interim government . Today the owner is the Asmara Brewery Corporation , which is owned by investors and the state of Eritrea. The brewery has an output of over 400,000 bottles and exports up to 40 percent of its production, while the rest is consumed in Eritrea.
