Marvin Santiago

Marvin Santiago (born December 26, 1947 in San Juan , Puerto Rico , † October 6, 2004 in Bayamón ), also known as "El Sonero del Pueblo", was a Puerto Rican salsa musician .

Career

Marvin Santiago was born in San Juan and had to move to a social housing project, the Nemesio Canales, on the Rio Puerto Rico in his youth. Marvin Santiago was called El Grifo de Canales because of his origins . In his early youth he was diagnosed with diabetes 1. Marvin Santiago began his musical career as a bolero and salsa singer. In the 1970s he worked with Rafael Cortijo and Bobby Valentín . This resulted in the albums Rompecabezas and Soy Boricua . The song Pirata de la Mar became an international hit. For a time, Santiago was a member of the Fania All-Stars group ( Celia Cruz , Rubén Blades , Pellin Rodríguez, Roberto Roena and Andy Montañez ). In 1977 he entered into a cooperation with the rival group PRAS. The popularity and use of local slang earned Marvin Santiago the nickname El Sonero del Pueblo . His biggest hits included Fuego a la jicotea , Al Son de la Lata (Baila el Chorizo) , El Mangoneo , La Picúa and Vasos de Colores . At the height of his musical success, Santiago was arrested for possession of cocaine and sentenced to nine years in prison, from which he served five years. During his time in prison, Santiago became a born again Christian and took in Desde Adentro . The song Auditorio Azul was an allusion to the blue uniforms of the correctional facilities. After serving his sentence, Santiago was unable to build on the musical successes of the past. In the meantime, Puerto Rican merengue groups like Conjunto Quisqueya and Freddie Kenton had partly replaced the classic salsa. Another trend was Salsa Romántica, represented by Eddie Santiago , Gilberto Santa Rosa and Frankie Ruiz , for example . Marvin Santiago appeared in the TV show of Luisito Vigoreaux as a comedian. In the 1990s, his health deteriorated. Due to his advanced diabetes, his leg had to be amputated, he lost a considerable part of his eyesight and suffered extensive damage to his liver, kidneys and heart. Marvin Santiago died on October 6, 2004 in Bayamón Hospital.
