Birtoxin is a neurotoxin from the South African thick-tailed scorpion Parabuthus transvaalicus .
properties
Birtoxin is a peptide and the most common toxin in the venom of the South African thick-tailed scorpion. In addition, the toxins Dortoxin , Bestoxin and Altitoxin are also present in the poison . Birtoxin has three disulfide bridges . Birtoxin lowers the threshold for activation of voltage-gated sodium channels in mammals . As a result, symptoms of poisoning in mammals are convulsions, the urge to urinate, tremors and an accelerated breathing rate. It shares the same N -terminal 18 amino acids with bestoxin .
