Bestoxin is a neurotoxin from the South African thick-tailed scorpion Parabuthus transvaalicus .

Bestoxin is a peptide and a toxin in the venom of the South African thick-tailed scorpion. In addition, the toxins birtoxin , dortoxin and altitoxin are also present in the poison . Bestoxin has three disulfide bridges . Bestoxin binds to binding site 4 of voltage-gated sodium channels in mammals and lowers their threshold for activation. It shares the same N -terminal 18 amino acids with birtoxin .
