Bischofswiese (Halle)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bischofswiese is located in the Dölauer Heide , the city forest of the city of Halle (Saale) . It is the location of one of the largest and oldest fortifications from the Neolithic Age, as well as some barrows . It is also part of the approximately 52 hectare nature reserve of the same name, which has existed since 1961 .

The Dölauer Heide is located in the north-west of the city of Halle (Saale) and, with around 740 hectares, is the largest conservation area in the vicinity. In this city forest lies the so-called Bischofswiese, a high plateau between the Schwarzer Berg (135 m) and the Langem Berg. The area got its name because it was owned by the Magdeburg Archdiocese for a long time .

On the plateau there is a fortification system with palisades , ramparts, gates and a trench system, which consists of up to six trenches staggered one behind the other in flat terrain. The area of the fortification is around 25 hectares, making it one of the largest of its kind. 35 Neolithic burial mounds from the corded ceramics and funnel cup culture (TBK) were found in the vicinity of the complex, some of which (around 28 burial mounds ) were excavated. Some of them are stone boxes . A decorated stone box is in the State Museum for Prehistory (Halle) . The fortifications were built around 3600 BC. Built by the bearers of the Baalberg culture . The plateau experienced another prehistoric use, especially the northern area (Langer Berg), in the period between 3100 and 2800 BC. BC ( Bernburg culture ). Today, some signs point to the respective archaeological monuments.
