The Bismarck Tower in Bonn's Gronau is a memorial to Otto von Bismarck in the Rheinaue leisure park . It stands as a monument under monument protection .

location

The Bismarck Tower is located in the northern part of the Rheinaue on the left bank of the Rhine. It lies between the Schiffchensee and the Rhine and can be reached via the footpath and cycle path on the banks of the Rhine (Heimkehrerweg).

architecture

The Bonn tower corresponds to the general Bismarck tower design "Götterdämmerung" by the architect Wilhelm Kreis . It consists of a massive tower body with two suggested columns on each side, which stands on a three-tiered base and another pedestal on top. In total, it is 13 meters high and consists of basalt lava . On the side facing the Rhine there is a relief made of trachyte showing the imperial eagle and Bismarck's coat of arms. On its top, the tower carries a rectangular fire bowl of 2 m × 3 m made of wrought iron. It can be reached via crampons inside the column, which in turn can be entered through a door in one of the sides.

history

The construction of the tower was promoted by student associations and civil associations. The foundation stone was laid on June 21, 1900, the inauguration on January 18, 1901. This made the tower the fifth in the “Götterdämmerungs” style. The tower was built on a piece of land owned by the city and became the property of the city under the condition of maintenance, but was financed by donations from the population. The cost was 20,300 gold marks , 660 of which for the fire bowl. City planning officer Rudolf Schultze (construction management) and the architect Hans Bloemers were involved in the management of the building . The tower was built by J. Spettmann and J. Runge, the eagle relief comes from Bachem & Co.

In 1989 the building was restored by Deutsche Atochem-Werke . The occasion was the 2000 year celebration of the city of Bonn.
