Bismarck Tower (Langenberg)
The Bismarck Tower on the Hordtberg in the Langenberg district of Velbert was inaugurated on April 1, 1906 and is 28.4 m high.
history
The construction of a Bismarck tower was suggested in 1902 by the Beautification Association in Langenberg / Rhineland , chaired by the silk manufacturer Lucas Colsman. The tower was designed by the architect Arno Eugen Fritsche in Elberfeld . Bricks and phonolite were used as building materials .
A restaurant was later built at the foot of the tower, through which the stairwell of the tower can be entered.
Not far away is the Langenberg radio station , whose origins go back to 1925.
In the Second World War, the Wehrmacht used the Bismarck Tower as a radio station, as the tower is very high in order to distribute the radio waves well. In order to prevent sufficient communication for the troops, the then 9th Division of the US Army captured the tower and used it for its own purposes.
