Diocese of Saint David's
The Diocese of Saint David's ( English Diocese of St David’s , Welsh Esgobaeth Tyddewi ) is a diocese of the Anglican Church in Wales with its seat in St Davids . It was a Roman Catholic diocese until the English Reformation .
history
The diocese of Saint David's was established in the 6th century. David became the first bishop . The construction of the cathedral began under Bishop Peter de Leia .
The last Roman Catholic bishop, Henry Morgan , was deposed by Queen Elizabeth I in 1559 . Bishop Henry Morgan died in December of that year.
The Catholic diocese of Saint David's was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Canterbury as a suffragan .
After the English Reformation, the diocese of Saint David's belonged to the ecclesiastical province of Canterbury of the Church of England until the Welsh Anglican Church became independent as a Church in Wales in 1920 .
