The Dutch Bits of Freedom Foundation was founded in 2000 . The organization, based in Amsterdam, advocates digital civil rights , net neutrality , data protection , copyright and freedom of information in network policy .
In terms of content, the organization is currently focusing on three issues that are essential for the work, according to its own presentation: 1. Private communication should also remain private on the Internet. 2. The infrastructure of the Internet should remain open, users at the endpoints should be able to exchange data undisturbed by interventions by infrastructure operators, for example. 3. Digital sharing of information is a necessary basis for democratic coexistence and should therefore not be restricted by an unbalanced interpretation of copyrights. Bit of Freedom rejected a levy for embedding web videos that was advocated by Dutch collecting societies.
Interruption of the foundation's work
The foundation's work was suspended between September 1, 2006 and August 2009. It was resumed on August 14, 2009 as a result of a funding commitment from the Internet4All foundation.
Key figures
According to its own statements, the foundation raised a total of 438,000 euros in 2013. Most of the income came from foundations (265,000 euros, 60.5 percent of the income). Individual donations from private individuals brought in 129,000 euros - a share of 29.5 percent.
