The late medieval half-timbered house at Bitzenstrasse 34-36 in Hungen , Gießen district, is a Hessian cultural monument for historical and urban planning reasons . It is the oldest residential building in the town of Hungen and the district's oldest farmhouse.

The corner house is exposed on a street triangle, from which Bitzenstraße runs in three directions in the city center, uphill to the Protestant town church Hungen , to the market square and out of town over the dam on the Horloff river (Dammweg). Dendrochronological studies on the beams of the front house date the building to the year 1465.

The two-storey building stands on a low natural stone base and unites two separate apartments with approx. 90 m² each under a shared saddle roof. The building was divided in 1737. The door to Bitzenstraße 34 is on the gable side, the door to Bitzenstraße 36 on the eaves side. The gable façades in post construction and the strongly curved half-timbered thresholds point to the old age of the twin house. The front part of the building (No. 34) shows, in contrast to the rear part, between the ground floor and the first floor an overhang.

In 1618 a barn was added. The entire south wall (rear gable wall) of the building was renewed in 1658, the corner posts have been preserved and the front part of them shortened by approx. 25 centimeters. Since then, the floor plan is no longer perfectly rectangular. When the house was divided in 1737, a new entrance and new walls were created. In 1808 the building received two half-timbered stables. As early as 1887/8, the half-timbering on the post facade to the courtyard was renewed. In 1984 the rear structure Bitzenstraße 36 was privately acquired and expanded, in 2008 the house owner also acquired the end structure Bitzenstraße 34 of the half-timbered house. In 2009–2013 the plaster and cladding of the head structure was exposed and restored. The urban development subsidy subsidized the private builder with 105,000 euros, the state of Hesse with 30,000 euros and the district with 11,000 euros. During the renovation, the old structure was largely preserved, and only a few oak beams were replaced by demolition frameworks from the area. The front building received three dormers , the rear building already had four. The beams of the framework are dark brown, the fields white.

In 2014, the client and three craftsmen received third place in the Federal Prize for Crafts in Monument Preservation . In 2014 the client also received the Hessian Monument Preservation Prize “for the committed and sensitive repair and renovation of the oldest farmhouse (built in 1465) in the district of Gießen”.
