Björn Hansen (Slavist)

Björn Hansen (born July 5, 1964 in Flensburg ) is a German Slavist . His research focus is the area of modality .

Life

Björn Hansen studied Slavic and German with Volkmar Lehmann and Jochen Rehbein in Hamburg . After a research stay at the Institute for Linguistic Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences , Björn Hansen received his doctorate with a topic from Aspectology (On the grammar of reference and episodicity). Since then, his research has focused on questions of modality and mode, with Hansen applying approaches derived from language typology to the Slavic languages. His most important works in this area include the modal auxiliary in Slavic: grammaticalization and semantics in Russian, Polish, Serbian / Croatian and Old Church Slavonic and the area-typological anthology Modals in the Languages ​​of Europe (edited with Ferdinand de Haan). In the area of ​​grammaticalization, his focus is particularly on the role of language contact in this process. Björn Hansen himself describes his approach as theory-informed and data-driven . After two years as a lecturer in Slavonic Linguistics and Philology at the Department of Slavonic Studies at the University of Cambridge , Björn Hansen accepted the chair for Slavonic Philology (Linguistics) at the University of Regensburg in 2002 .
