Björn Mikael Söderberg (born April 1, 1958 , † October 12, 1999 in Stockholm ) was a member of the Swedish anarcho-syndicalist union Sveriges Arbetares Central Organization , which was murdered by neo-Nazis in Sätra , a district of Stockholm .

Life

Björn Söderberg was a member of the Sveriges Arbetares Central Organization, a syndicalist union. While working as a warehouse worker for office supplies, he discovered that there were many neo-Nazis among his colleagues and gave the Swedish news magazine Arbetaren a hint about the Nazi past of his colleague and shop steward for the union Robert Vesterlund . This notice led to a newspaper article dated September 16, 1999, in which this issue was discussed. As a result, Robert Vesterlund gave up his post as a union member and resigned from his position.

death

This motivated Hampus Hellekant and Jimmy Niklasson, both with connections to the Swedish Nazi organization Nationell Ungdom , and Björn Lindberg-Hernlund to shoot Björn Söderberg on October 12 while leaving his apartment.

Hampus Hellekant and Björn Lindberg-Hernlund were convicted in court for the murder of Björn Söderberg, Jimmy Niklasson for "skyddande av brottsling, grovt vapenbrott, och förberedels" (for example: preparing and assisting in a serious act of violence).

Commemoration

On October 23, 1999, 20,000 people gathered on Medborgarplatsen for an anti-fascist demonstration and October 12 was declared the day of moral courage in Sweden. On this day the price for moral courage was awarded in memory of the murder of Söderberg.
