The yellow-fronted or South American gray owl or pale-faced owl ( Aegolius harrisii ) is a species of the genus Aegolius that is only found in South America .
features
The bird reaches a height of about 20 centimeters. The top of the bird is dark brown with a light, cream-colored shoulder stripe that runs down the nape of the neck. The ventral side is yellowish-brown with a dark band on the chest. It is named after the facial drawing with a light yellow forehead and cheeks. Very little is known about the ecology and way of life; it has been proven above all in open, mostly cultivated terrain up to 3,800 meters above sea level.
Subspecies
Three subspecies have been described, which differ mainly in their coloration:
- Aegolius harrisii harrisii ( Cassin , 1849) occurs from Venezuela , Colombia via Ecuador to Peru .
- Aegolius harrisii iheringi ( Sharpe , 1899) is common in Paraguay , southeastern Brazil , Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina .
- Aegolius harrisii dabbenei Olrog , 1979 occurs in western Bolivia and northwest Argentina.
Etymology and history of research
The yellow- faced owl was first described in 1849 by John Cassin under the scientific name Nyctale Harrisii. The type specimen he had from John Graham Bell (1812-1889). Only later was it added to the genus Aegolius, newly created by Johann Jakob Kaup in 1829 . This name is derived from "aigōlios αιγωλιος " for "a bad omen for a bird that lives on rocks and in caves and is probably an owl." “Harrisii” is Edward Harris (1799–1863), “dabbenei” is Roberto Raúl Dabbene (1864–1938) and “iheringi” is dedicated to Hermann von Ihering (1850–1930).
