The Black Mountain with 1263 meters the highest mountain in the US state of Kentucky . It is located in Harlan County in the southeast of the state near the border with Virginia and is part of the Cumberland Mountains , a mountain range of the Appalachians . Black Mountain has the shape of an elongated, wooded ridge. The summit itself is easily accessible in the northeast area of the mountain and by a road. At the top there are several transmission towers , slightly below a radome of the Federal Aviation Administration .
The next higher mountain is the High Knob , about 15 miles east in Virginia.
