The Blackstone Plain ( English for Black Stone Plain ) is a small plain at the northern end of Saunders Island in the archipelago of the South Sandwich Islands . It's just south of Harper Point . It consists of dark basaltic lava and, as the crew of the British ship HMS Protector discovered in 1964 , is the only ice and snow-free area on the island.
The plane was given its descriptive name in 1971 by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee .
