Systematics

The genus Blackstonia was established in 1762 by William Hudson in Flora Anglica , p. 146. The genus name Blackstonia honors the English botanist John Blackstone (1712–1753). A synonym of Blackstonia Huds. is Chlora Adans.

The genus Blackstonia belongs to the subtribe Chironiinae from the tribe Chironieae within the Gentianaceae family .

The genus Blackstonia contains only about four species:

  • Later bitterling ( Blackstonia acuminata (Koch & Ziz) Domin ): Some authors also call it the subspecies Blackstonia perfoliata subsp. serotina (Rchb.) Vollm. to Blackstonia perfoliata .
  • Streaky-leaved bitterling ( Blackstonia perfoliata (L.) Huds. ): There are two subspecies:
    • Blackstonia perfoliata subsp. intermedia (Ten.) Zeltner
    • Blackstonia perfoliata subsp. perfoliata
  • Large-flowered bitterling ( Blackstonia grandiflora (Viv.) Maire ): Some authors also call it the subspecies Blackstonia perfoliata subsp. grandiflora (Viv.) Maire to Blackstonia perfoliata . It is originally found in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Spain, the Balearic Islands, Sardinia, Corsica and Sicily.
  • Free-leaved bitterling ( Blackstonia imperfoliata (L. f.) Samp. ): Some authors also call it the subspecies Blackstonia perfoliata subsp. imperfoliata (L. f.) Franco & Rocha Afonso to Blackstonia perfoliata . It occurs in Europe in Portugal, Spain, Menorca, France, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and Italy.
