The Blattidae are a family within the cockroaches (Blattodea). Among them are a number of known storage pests and human dwellers, some of which are known as cockroaches .
Systematics
The Blattidae family is represented in Europe with the following four species, all of which were introduced as neozoa from warmer regions (unspecifically cockroach, called cockroach ):
- Common cockroach , cockroach ( Blatta orientalis Linnaeus , 1758)
- American cockroach ( Periplaneta americana ( Linnaeus , 1767))
- Brown cockroach ( Periplaneta brunnea Burmeister , 1838)
- Australian cockroach ( Periplaneta australasiae ( Fabricius , 1775))
Other known types are:
- Shelfordella lateralis (Tartar cockroach, Persian cockroach, "chocolate cockroach")
- Smoky brown cockroach ( Periplaneta fuliginosa Serville , 1838)
- Florida skunk cockroach ( Eurycotis floridana ( Walker , 1868))
Fossil occurrences
Cockroaches now live under decaying tree bark, so their appearance in amber is not surprising. Representatives of the Blattidae family have been described from Baltic amber ( Eocene ).
