features

Females of the blue-eyed carp grow up to 6.5 centimeters in length, while males only grow to a maximum of 5 centimeters. The fish is slim in shape. Both sexes are olive yellow in color, with a lighter belly region. The fins have a matt blue border and a yellowish tint. The iris glows intensely blue. There are local forms with dark spots on the side surfaces.

Occurrence and way of life

Female of the blue-eyed carp

The Kärpfling colonizes the upper reaches of the Río-Coatzacoalcos system in Oaxaca in southeastern Mexico . Adults swim in loose groups in the currents of the rivers. They even jump out of the water on the hunt for flying insects. Young fish prefer to stay in the edge area with little current, between crevices in the rock or in similar hiding places. The habitat of Priapella intermedia is poor in underwater vegetation, the water temperatures are 25 to 27 ° C.

After a gestation period of around 28 days, females of the viviparous fish give birth to 5 to 20 fry, which are already eight millimeters long at birth.

The population of this fish species is not considered endangered.

Aquaristics

The fish needs high quality, agitated water. The aquarium shouldn't be too small. A lot of live food , especially insect-rich food, for example fruit flies of the genus Drosophila, is required for successful offspring .
