Priapella is a genus of viviparous toothcarps . The species of the genus mainly inhabit clear, fast-flowing streams on the Atlantic slope in southern Mexico .

description

All Priapella species have a blue iris . In contrast to many other viviparous toothcarps, the sexual dimorphism is not particularly pronounced; only the gonopodium can be used to distinguish between males and females. The basic body color is beige to olive with a lighter belly side and a slightly darker longitudinal band. The fish reach a length of up to seven centimeters, males stay a little smaller.

Systematics

Six species of the genus are known, one of which is considered extinct.

Aquaristic importance

Priapella species are rarely offered in specialist aquarium stores. Since they are specialized in approach food (insects that fall on the water surface) in nature, they are not easy to keep in the aquarium.
