The Olmekenkärpfling ( Priapella olmecae ) is a rare freshwater ornamental fish from the family of viviparous tooth-carps . He lives in parts of the pre-Columbian homeland of the Olmecs in southeastern Mexico .

features

Females of this Kärpfling attain a length of up to six centimeters, males stay one centimeter smaller. The physique in both sexes is somewhat stocky with a short and pointed head. Adult males have a scaly keel on the underside of the caudal peduncle. Both males and females are gray-brown to bluish in color. The unpaired fins are orange to reddish, including the gonopodium of the males. The pectoral and pelvic fins are colorless. As with all Priapella species, the iris glows intensely blue.

Occurrence and way of life

The distribution area of the Olmec Parrot is limited to a few rivers and lakes in Tuxtlas in the Mexican state of Veracruz . The carafe was found in the Río Agua Frio , Río de la Palma , Río las Maquinas and in Lake Catemaco and some neighboring lagoons.

The Olmec Parrot inhabits both the fast and slow flowing areas of the rivers. The water temperatures are between 21 and 27 ° C. The water is clear, the river bed consists of gravel and mud. There are no aquatic plants, but dense vegetation shadows the banks. The Kärpfling occurs together with swordtails ( Xiphophorus hellerii ) and Poecilia mexicana , in the Río Agua Frio it occurs together with platys ( Xiphophorus maculatus ) and Heterandria bimaculata .

Behavioral biology

Olmec dams are the subject of behavioral research. It could be shown that both males and females have a preference for sexual partners to whom an artificial sword similar to that of the related swordtail ( Xiphophorus hellerii ) was attached.
