Priapella chamulae is a freshwater fish of the genus Blauaugenkärpflinge ( Priapella ) within the viviparous toothcarps (Poeciliinae). It is closely related to the squat blue-eyed parrot ( Priapella compressa ). However, deviations in the structure of the gonopodium and other morphological features allowed the description as an independent species.

features

With a standard length of up to 4.8 cm, the Kärpfling is one of the largest representatives within the Priapella genus . Another study gives an average standard length of 3.0 cm for females and 2.6 cm for males. The body is relatively high back, the head long and tapering and makes up 25.5–27.5% of the standard length. The male gonopodium is short. The number of dorsal fin rays is 9, in contrast to this P. compressa has 10 rays. The number of gill traps in P. chamulae (10–12) is lower than in P. compressa (12–13).

Occurrence and way of life

Priapella chamulae populates the tributaries in the upper Río-Grijalva system in the Mexican states of Tabasco and Chiapas . The type locality is a small brook with a width of 0.5 to 1 m, which flows into a tributary of the Río Tacotalpa . The water there had a temperature of 26 ° C and a pH of 8.0. The total hardness is given as 10–15. The fast flowing water was crystal clear. The ground consisted of gravel and sand, there were no aquatic plants. The stream runs deeply and was completely shaded by vegetation. Together with P. chamulae , Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus , Gambusia spec. , Heterophallus milleri , Poecilia mexicana and Astyanax mexicanus . The blue-eyed carp fish prefers the faster flowing areas of its habitat, the edge areas with standing water are mostly dominated by poecilia and astyanax .

The exclusively carnivorous Karpfling feeds mainly on arthropods that have fallen into the water or land on the surface of the water . When the stomach contents were examined, ants made up the largest proportion .

The sex ratio of adult carrots is strongly shifted towards the female sex in nature; there are around eight females for every male. Females of viviparous fish give birth to 2–16 fry per litter, on average 6.38. During development in the womb, the embryos feed mainly on yolk lecitotrophically and are not supplied with additional nutrients by the mother. All of the females examined only carried embryos from one stage of development; there are no signs of superfetation as has been observed in other viviparous toothcarps.

etymology

The specific epithet chamulae was given by the first descriptive authors in honor of the indigenous population living in the area around Chamula .
