Pseudoxiphophorus is a genus of livebearing toothcarps (Poeciliinae). The fish are found in Central America in Mexico ( Veracruz , Tabasco , Yucatán ), Belize , Guatemala , Honduras and Nicaragua .

features

Pseudoxiphophorus species reach lengths between 4 cm and 7 cm (males) and between 6 cm and 15 cm (females). They are elongated fish of greenish, grayish-olive to brownish color. Characteristic of the genus is a black spot on the base of the caudal fin and another black spot above each pectoral fin. The sexual dimorphism is low. Females and males largely correspond in body shape and color, with males the black portion of the coloring is usually more pronounced. Especially at night the males become very dark from the middle of the body to the tail fin end. The male gonopodium is very long.

Way of life

Pseudoxiphophorus species live in weedy, calmly flowing waters of the lowlands as well as in mountain streams. They feed on invertebrates and vegetable foods.

Systematics

Pseudoxiphophorus has long been considered a subgenus of Heterandria . However, recent research has shown that the two genera are not closely related. Nine species have been described so far:
