The blue manakin ( Chiroxiphia caudata ) is a South American passerine bird of the family of Manakin.
features
The male's plumage is predominantly blue in color, with almost completely black wings, a black head, a red crown and long blue tail feathers. The female is dull green in color, with a darker wing edge, lighter belly and olive-green throat and breast. The bird feeds on insects, berries and other small fruits.
Occurrence
The blue-breasted pipra lives in secondary and rainforests in south-east Brazil, east Paraguay, and north-east Argentina.
Reproduction
Up to fifty males gather in a clearing and perform dances to attract the attention of females. First, each bird chooses its place in the low branches of the surrounding trees and waits there for its turn. During the courtship dance, each bird makes different calls and makes whirring noises with its wings. The female chooses a partner and, after mating, takes care of building the nest, incubating and rearing the young on her own. Two eggs are usually incubated in a bowl-shaped nest in twigs above a body of water.
