Around 1410, the bailiff and court lord Eberhard Stagel opened a tavern on Badenerstrasse in Zurich- Altstetten . Against the resistance of a landlord from Dietikon and the local court lord, the abbot of the Wettingen monastery , the right to tavern was confirmed by the court lord of Altstetten. He thought the new inn met a need. Many travelers, es syen bilgi, kouflüt or other lüt , would have suffered repeated damage because they had not found any accommodation.

Guests were pilgrims, merchants and other travelers. The time for the opening was well chosen: at that time numerous pilgrimages took place, at the same time the traffic in the Limmat Valley shifted from the river to the road that led through Altstetten.

The namesake of the tavern in Altstetten came from the mallard ducks, which often nested in the area at that time , and were popularly called “blue ducks” because of their blue wing mirrors. The sign with the blue duck that hung in front of the tavern in Altstetten from 1674 was made by a craftsman in the area. Today it is kept in the local museum in Altstetten.

In 1760 the “Blue Duck” came into the possession of the Wehrli family from Zurich, who still own it today. In 1850, the then owner, Major Jakob Wehrli, closed the “Blue Duck” in Altstetten; for time reasons he could no longer operate the tavern. In 1880 Wehrli also renounced the tavern rights in Altstetten.

In 1986 Jakob Wehrli's descendants opened a restaurant in the area of the Tiefenbrunnen mill that bears the name of its predecessor from Altstetten.
