history

Tiefenbrunnen brewery around 1900

The old buildings of the Tiefenbrunnen mill were built in 1889/90 as a brewery with elaborate representative facades in exposed brickwork . The palace- style exterior, planned by the architect Peter Bender from Mannheim, is typical of the buildings of the food industry of the Belle Époque . After 23 years the brewery was bought up by a competitor and closed down. In 1913, Müller Wehrli & Koller , who had operated a mill on the Obere Mühlesteg in the Limmat , bought the brewery building and had the main building converted into a large mill with electric group drive for the time ; a single motor drove the entire system with numerous belts and shafts. At the same time, the building opposite was set up as a cold store . The mill operated by the Wehrli family was one of the last examples of vertical group drive mechanics until it was shut down at the end of 1983, as was common in factories until the introduction of the individual electric drive.

The production of the Wehrli mill was outsourced in 1983 and relocated to the canton of Lucerne, the Tiefenbrunnen grain collection point remained in operation practically unchanged for 70 years until 1998.

In a contract between the city of Zurich and the Wehrli AG brothers as the owner, the protection of part of the building was regulated in 1983. The owner family wanted to preserve or reconstruct practically the entire old structure. As far as possible, no coring was made in order to preserve the internal structure of the old buildings.

Architect Pierre Zoelly from Zollikon was commissioned with the project planning . He ensured a protective upgrade of the substance and implemented the intended variety of uses in a mixture of old and new buildings.
