features

Blue-crowned parrots reach a length of up to 12 centimeters. They are short-tailed parrots with a very delicate beak.

The plumage is mostly green, the tail feathers are red. The female is colored similarly to the male, but lacks the red throat and the blue crown. Blue-crowned parrots have a melodic voice, but can also call out very shrilly.

Like bats, their sleeping and resting positions are upside down. Otherwise they are diurnal tree dwellers who almost never come to the ground. Their habitat are rainforests, bamboo jungles, parks and fruit trees. They are also found in gardens in urban areas. They move quickly even on thin branches. If they feel threatened, they take cover in the foliage. The diet consists mainly of fruits, flower nectar and pollen and occasionally small seeds.

Blue-crowned parrots are cave breeders . The female lays three to four eggs. The incubation period is 18 to 20 days.
