The Bloody Brook massacre was perpetrated on September 18, 1675 by Pocumtuc - Indians of English settlers in South Deerfield , Massachusetts . It was part of the King Philip's War .

The English captain Lothrop and 84 soldiers seized the grain at Hadley that the settlers there had left behind on their flight from the Indians. On their return they were unexpectedly surrounded by 700 to 800 Indians on September 18, 1675 while crossing Bloody Brook south of Deerfield . About ten soldiers escaped, the rest were killed. Captain Mosely, who heard the noise of battle in Deerfield, hurried with his unit and with 60 Mohegan to reach the battle site as quickly as possible. When he arrived the Indians were mutilating the bodies of the dead. After several hours of desperate fighting, the Pocumtuc withdrew. Captain Mosely's men killed 96 Pocumtuc.
