Blott en dag

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Blott en dag (Just a day) is a Swedish song , the text of which was written by Lina Sandell-Berg in 1865 and sung in a slightly modified form to a melody by Oscar Ahnfeldt in 1872 . It is about the devotion of a believer to God and is often played at funerals, especially in Sweden.

The Swedish singer and Grand Prix winner Carola Häggkvist recorded the song on her album of the same name in 1998. Blott en dag was used by director Bo Widerberg for his film Schön ist die Jugendzeit and by Kim Ki-duk for his film Bad Guy .

Swedish lyrics

Blott en dag, ett ögonblick i sänder,
vilken comforts vad a commer on!
Allt ju vilar i min Faders hand,
Hjälp mig då att vila tryggt also still
blott vid dina, Herrre kär,
ej min tro och ej the consolation förspilla,
som i ordet mig förvarad är.
Hjälp mig, gentlemen, att vad helst mig handlers,
taga ur din trogna fadershand
blott en dag, ett ögonblick i sänder,
tills hunt nått det goda land.

English lyrics

Day by day, and with each passing moment,
Strength I find to meet my trials here;
Trusting in my Father's wise bestowment,
I've no cause for worry or for fear.
He, whose heart is kind beyond all measure,
Gives unto each day what He deems best,
Lovingly its part of pain and pleasure,
Mingling toilet with peace and rest.
Every day the Lord Himself is near me,
With a special mercy for each hour;
All my cares He fain would bear and cheer me,
He whose name is Counselor and Pow'r.
The protection of His child and treasure
Is a charge that on Himself He laid;
"As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,"
This the pledge to me He made.
Help me then, in every tribulation,
So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
That I lose not faith's sweet consolation,
Offered me within Thy holy Word.
Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,
E'er to take, as from a father's hand,
One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
Till I reach the promised land.
