permanently frozen over

The Blue Lake ( English for blue lake ) is the largest of the numerous frozen small freshwater lakes not far from Cape Royds on the Antarctic Ross Island .

The lake is located about one kilometer in a north-northeast direction from the base camp of the Nimrod Expedition (1907-1909), which is still preserved today, under the direction of the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton . Participants of the expedition gave the lake its name because of the intense blue color of its ice.
