Robert E. "Bob" O'Connor, Jr. (born December 9, 1944 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , † September 1, 2006 ibid) was an American politician and mayor of the city of Pittsburgh from January 3, 2006 until his death . He belonged to the Democratic Party .

O'Connor was born in 1944 in the Greenfield neighborhood. He attended Pittsburgh's Taylor Allderdice High School , briefly worked as a steel worker and in the hospitality industry, where he rose to become vice president of a chain. He was married to Jud Levine O'Connor, with whom he had a daughter and two sons.

His political career began in 1991 with the election to the city council, which he chaired from 1998 as president. In 1997 and 2001 he tried to assert himself in his party as a candidate for mayor's office. However, he failed both times because of Tom Murphy , the incumbent mayor. The result was particularly tight in 2001, when both candidates received around 30,000 votes after a million dollar campaign. Murphy prevailed by 699 votes.

In the internal primaries in 2005, O'Connor finally had success, also because Murphy did not run again. On November 8, he won the election against Republican Joe Weinroth. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor a few months after the election. Despite an initially positive diagnosis, he died on September 1, 2006 at UPMC Shadyside Hospital .
