The Bockwitzer See emerged as a post-mining landscape near Borna south of Leipzig from the former open- cast lignite mine Borna-Ost / Bockwitz , which was flooded from 1993 to 2005 by rising groundwater . The lake was named after the devastated Gut Bockwitz . It belongs to the " Leipziger Neuseenland ".

In the east the lake is bounded by the federal highway 176 ; there is a lookout point at it.
To the south of the lake is the deeper remaining hole Südkippe , to the west of this remaining hole is another remaining hole, the main water drainage .

The Bockwitzer See can be reached via federal highway 176 . There is parking for 10–15 vehicles. Another parking lot is on the western bank. This can be reached via the new connecting road between Dittmannsdorf and Borna .
use
The Bockwitz lake and its surroundings were converted into the 545 hectare FFH area "Post-mining landscape Bockwitz". It is one of the largest in Saxony. With over 180 bird, 12 amphibian and 4 reptile species, the area has a rich fauna. Some areas are grazed extensively.
A path leads around the Bockwitzer See, on the inclines concrete slabs provide support.
