The cellar building

Bodegas Ysios is a Spanish winery in Laguardia in the north of the Iberian Peninsula . The vineyards of the estate are located on the wine route in the Rioja Alavesa wine region , which has the status of a Denominacion de Origen . The cellar building is one of the avant-garde buildings in wine architecture .

architecture

The cellar building was designed by the Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava and executed by Ferrovial . The client was Pernod Ricard (Bodegas Domecq). The building is designed to be integrated into the rolling landscape of the Sierra de Cantabria. The construction of the winery began in 1998 and inaugurated in 2001. The building rests on two reinforced concrete structural walls that are 26 meters apart for a total length of 196 meters. These walls are connected by vertical strips of wood treated with copper salts, which are shaped like sines and cosines, reminiscent of a row of lying barrels. The roof is made of wooden beams that rest on the side walls. These take up the wave-shaped surface as a motif. The material used for this is provided with an aluminum outer cladding that contrasts with the wood of the walls. The avant-garde design of the exterior continues inside the winery.

Companies

The winery has 65 hectares of its own vineyards, which are mostly planted with Tempranillo . 2500 barrique barrels (barrica bordelesa) are available for wooden barrel storage. The bottle store for post-maturation of the Reservas holds 1,000,000 bottles. The independent oenologist Hervé Romat advises the winery on winemaking .
