Body spray

Different types of body sprays

A body spray or body mist is a liquid mixture of alcohol and odoriferous substances , which is intended to generate pleasant smells and has a light and refreshing effect on the skin. However, the smell is lighter than that of a perfume . This means that the smell will dissipate faster due to the higher alcohol content.

ingredients

Like perfumes, body sprays have a high alcohol content . In addition, they mainly consist of water with oil, emulsifiers , which are supposed to help stabilize, and other caring ingredients. For example, moisturizing complexes, vitamins (mostly vitamin A and vitamin E ) and essential oils ensure a pleasant scent and care for the skin. Some body sprays can also contain liposomes , which are supposed to maintain the elasticity of the skin surface.

Effects

A body spray can not only be used to scent the body, but also for skin care. Due to its ingredients (such as oil), the skin is cared for and supplied with moisture at the same time. Thus, the body spray can also be perceived as very refreshing.

Phototoxic reactions

In general, using body sprays is harmless. However, body sprays should not be applied before sunbathing , as certain ingredients can lead to phototoxic reactions. The symptoms of this are often the following:

These phototoxic reactions are mostly triggered by vanillin , cumerin and alcohols. These substances are chemically changed by the UVA and UVB rays of sunlight, so that undesirable skin reactions can occur.

Since body sprays are also supposed to have a cooling effect in summer, they often contain alcohol, which in turn leads to a phototoxic reaction. Therefore, in summer you should make sure that the body sprays contain menthol instead of alcohol. In addition, there are already more and more "Special Summer Editions" in which the questionable substances are dispensed with. However, since these usually contain no alcohol, the scent only lasts for about four weeks.

Difference to deodorants

Various deodorants

Probably the most obvious difference between body sprays and deodorants is that a deodorant is usually only suitable for the armpits, whereby the body spray is sprayed on the entire body. The deodorant also contains antimicrobial substances , sweat inhibitors and odor absorbers, which are not found in body sprays. Deodorants are also available in pens, rollers, powders or creams. In contrast, body sprays usually contain substances that care for the skin, which care for the entire body and cool it at the same time. Both products together should help against unpleasant odors all over the body.
