The curved tooth coupling ( English curved tooth coupling is) a non-switchable coupling , to compensate, which is used to small axis or angular displacements between engine and transmission.

This is achieved through intermeshing crowned teeth (internal and external teeth). Curved tooth clutches consist of a motor-side and a transmission-side coupling half. Both halves are screwed together. The coupling half on the gearbox side is pressed onto the pinion shaft of the gearbox, the motor side onto the rotor shaft of the motor.

In rail vehicles, for example, it connects the traction motor with the partially suspended final drive . It is needed there because the axle-mounted gear moves relative to the bogie and the motor suspended in it.

Often these clutches also have what is known as a slip clutch , which protects the drive train from mechanical breakage or an electric machine from impermissibly high short-circuit currents in the event of the downstream gearbox blocking . (e.g. with a cordless screwdriver) There are both oil and grease-lubricated versions.
