Bohuslav Leopold (born September 6, 1888 in Škrdlovice , † May 12, 1956 in Prague ) was a Czech composer , violin virtuoso and music publisher.

Life

Bohuslav Leopold came from a humble background. He learned the beginnings of playing the violin from the village teacher before he went to Böhmisch Trübau for musical training at the age of eleven . At the age of 15 he moved to Budapest to play regimental music, where he served in the military from 1902 to 1910. In addition to his work as a violinist in the regimental band, he founded a gypsy band, through which he was influenced by folk music. He also studied music theory and composition at the Budapest Music Academy .

Further training stations up to the First World War were Lemberg , Prague and Krakow . After a brief period in the war, Leopold became conductor of the symphony orchestra at the war exhibition in Budapest in 1916 . After the war he became a member of the Sak Philharmonic in Prague until 1920 . At the same time he made a tour through Germany and France with his own ensemble. In 1924 he returned to Prague for health reasons and went from performer to composer. He used influences from various original European folk melodies. Leopold wrote upscale light music and numerous fantasies about folk songs for orchestra ( voices of the peoples ).
