As Boeotian War , also Boeotian war , sometimes a military conflict between the will of Thebes dominated Boeotia and Sparta called.

After the victory over Athens in the Peloponnesian Wars , Sparta was able to achieve hegemony over large parts of the ancient Greek motherland. 379/8 BC Theban democrats were able to overwhelm the Spartan occupation of the city in one stroke. In the following years the Thebans united Boeotia under their domination. The second Attic League , the 377 BC. BC was founded by Athens, the Thebans first joined in order to be able to form a broad front against the Spartans. However, they did not stay with the federal government for long and, under the leading Theban statesmen Pelopidas and Epaminondas, extended their influence over large parts of Greece to Macedonia .

371 BC Another attempt was made to negotiate a general Greek peace ( Koine Eirene ) to replace the various rival Greek systems of alliance and rule. But the attempts failed at a peace conference in Sparta because of the growing demands of the Thebans and the still existing hegemonic aspirations of the Spartans. The Spartans forbade the Theban envoy Epaminondas to sign in the name of the whole Boeotia. Thereupon they rejected the peace.

The Spartans then set up an army against Thebes. Under the leadership of Epaminondas, the Thebans were able to defeat the Spartan army in the ( Battle of Leuktra ). 350 to 400 of 700 Spartians were killed and Sparta lost the supremacy that Thebes held from then on.
