Boiskos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boiskos ( ancient Greek Βοίσκος ) was a Greek sculptor who worked in the 5th century BC. Was active.

Boiskos is only known from Tatian's news that he had created a statue of the lyric poet Myrtis . It is believed that, like Myrtis, he originated from Boiotia , possibly from Thebes . Various attempts have been made to identify Boiskos with other artists, but these attempts have been made without basis.

Heinrich Brunn wrote:

“Among the statues of Greek poets, Tatian [...] lists that of Myrtis as the work of Boïskos. Myrtis was from Anthedon in Boeotia [...], so that making her picture befitted a Boeot artist. This presumption would, of course, be eliminated if, after Gesner's suggestion, we replaced Boiskos with the more well-known name of Boethos. But there does not seem to be sufficient compulsion to do so "
