Bolaños bush rat tooth formula

The bolaños bush rat is a large bush rat that reaches an overall length of 326 to 404 mm. The tail length is 144 to 180 mm, the hind foot length 34 to 39 mm, the ear length 28 to 32 mm and the weight of an examined specimen is 198 g. The fur is short and rough. The middle back is dark due to the black undercoat hair. The flanks and cheeks are light cinnamon in color. The belly is whitish. The chest, hips and muzzle are gray-brown. The feet are white. The ears are narrow. The sparsely hairy tail is two-colored, black on the top and whitish gray on the underside. From the big-eared bush rat ( N. micropus ), the white-throated bush rat ( N. albigula ) and the Goldman bush rat ( N. goldmani ), the species differs through the sphenopalatine foramen (foramen sphenopalatinum). The Nelson bush rat ( N. nelsoni ) has a monochrome tail. The white-throated bush rat and the desert bush rat ( N. lepida ) have contrasting two-tone tails. The Mexican bush rat ( N. mexicana ) and the Tamaulipan bush rat ( N. angustapalata ) have an anterior inner hump on the first molar (M1) that extends over half the tooth, while in the Bolaños bush rat it extends to less than extends half of the tooth. The tooth formula is I 1/1 - C 0 / 0- PM 0 / 0- M 3/3, so the Bolaños bush rat has a total of 16 teeth.

habitat

The bolaños bush rat often inhabits riparian vegetation on nearby protruding slopes along sandbars and rocky environments, including stone walls. It can also be found in dry scrubland at altitudes between 938 m and 1904 m.

Way of life

Almost nothing is known about the way of life. A female with an embryo was caught in August.

status

The IUCN classifies the Bolaños-bush rat in the category of "endangered" ( vulnerable ). The size of the distribution area is less than 20,000 km 2 . Due to the sparse sightings in fewer than eleven locations, this species is considered rare. In 2007 the El Cajón dam was completed downstream of the main distribution area of this species. It is feared that the river floods caused by this dam will result in significant habitat loss for the Bolaños bush rat.
