Bolbonata is a genus of humpback chirps (Membracidae), a family of round-headed cicadas (Cicadomorpha) from the superfamily of the Membracoidea . The genus is divided into two sub-genera.

Distribution and types

There are 20 known species that occur in the Neotropics (Argentina to Mexico, also on some Caribbean islands). They are often very common in the tropical rainforests of the lowlands. An occurrence from the USA (Florida) has been reported for the Bolbonota tuberculata , but this is not certain. The species Bolbonota pictipennis and Bolbonota corrugata are known from relatively many countries .

features

The insects are quite small, about 2.2 to 5.5 millimeters long. They are usually dark in color and sometimes have lighter spots. Overall, they have a rather spherical shape; the thorns or outgrowths that are noticeable in other humpback leafhopper are missing. There are several keels on its surface and it is covered with tiny hairs. The head is flat and broad. The forewings have only two discoidal cells, the tibiae are flattened. The species of this genus are sometimes very similar to the representatives of the genus Erechtia . The habitus is reminiscent of the droppings of caterpillars, so it could be camouflage.

Way of life

The animals of the genus Bolbonota occur both individually and in groups. When the female lays eggs, she glues individual eggs with a white sticky foam. As a rule, the females lay at least 20 eggs in such an egg packet and glue them to a leaf surface or a stem. With the species Bolbonota inconspicua , the female can lay an egg packet daily for several days in a row. After about 24 days the larvae are fully grown (in Bolbonota aspidistre ). The larvae are covered with a white layer of wax. Reports that the females guard their eggs until the larvae hatch have yet to be confirmed.

Both the larvae and the adult cicadas are often visited by ants of various species.

The Bolbonota species feed on the phloem on various plants . Some species are considered to be potential pests on crops.

Systematics

The genus Bolbonota includes 20 species:
