Bolifushi is a small Maldivian island in the South Malé Atoll in the Indian Ocean . It is located on the northwestern edge of the atoll and measures 100 meters in width and 50 meters in length. The name of the island means something like shell island and is made up of two Dhivehi words: Boli are shells, Fushi are small islands. The bungalows in the northwest of the tourist island , which stand on stilt houses above the water in a triangular formation, are striking . In 2008 the Ministry of Tourism approved plans for extensive rebuilding of the island. The aim of the plans is to appeal to a more upscale audience.
