The Boliniaceae are a family of sac fungi that are in their own order Boliniales .

They mainly grow on wood. They are the only ones of the subclass Sordariomycetidae to form large, stromatic , carbonaceous fruiting bodies . These are perithecia . The asci are small, the ascospores brown, ellipsoidal, and often flattened. They often have germ pores. Anamorphs are not known.

In the past, the Boliniaceae were placed in different orders, such as the Xylariales or Sordariales. Molecular genetic studies have shown that they cannot be assigned to any of these. They were placed in their own order Bolariales within the Sordariomycetidae . The family consists of three genera:
