Bolshoi Theater 1886

The Bolshoi Theater ( Russian Большой театр "Great Theater") or Kamenny Theater ( Russian Каменный театр "Stone Theater") was a theater in Saint Petersburg .

It was built in 1783 in the classical style according to plans by Antonio Rinaldi as a "Kamenny" theater. In 1802, after a renovation by Jean-François Thomas de Thomon, it was renamed “Bolshoi”. The building burned down in a fire on January 1, 1811; it was reopened after being rebuilt by Antoine-François Mauduit on February 3, 1818.

The tsarist ballet and opera were located there until 1886. Although the Bolshoi Theater had many great Russian operas in its repertoire, most of the operas were premiered in the Mariinsky Theater .

In 1886 the building was classified as unsafe. Since then , ballet and opera performances have been staged in the Mariinsky Theater at the behest of the director Ivan Alexandrovich Vsevoloschsky . The Bolshoi Theater building was subsequently demolished to make way for the Saint Petersburg Conservatory .

The theater is not to be confused with the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow .
