Tire bombings

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tire bombings were two suicide bombings against buildings that were used by the Israeli army during the 1982 Lebanon War . The city of Tire is located in the south of Lebanon . The attacks killed a total of 103 Israeli soldiers and 46 to 59 Lebanese and wounded 95 people. Israel considers Hezbollah to be the originator of the attacks.

First bomb attack

After the Israeli partial occupation of Lebanon, the Israeli military set up command posts in the occupied cities. On November 11, 1982, a seven-story building that housed the Israeli headquarters was razed to the ground by a car bomb . 75 Israeli soldiers, border police and agents of the Shin Bet died . Furthermore, 14 to 27 Lebanese who were in Israeli captivity died. 27 Israelis and 28 Arabs were injured.

After the attack, the Israeli government claimed that it was a gas accident. This contradicts the testimony of witnesses who saw the Peugeot - in which the bomb was suspected - racing towards the Israelis' building seconds before the explosion, and a report by the Shin Bet describing Hezbollah's preparations for the attack.

Second bomb attack

Almost exactly a year later, an almost identical attack occurred in the city. A suicide bomber drove a truck full of explosives into a Shin Bet building at an army base in Tire. The explosion killed 28 Israelis and 32 Lebanese prisoners and injured another 40 people.
