Boney is an Australian crime series based on novels by Arthur W. Upfield . In the years 1972 to 1973 a total of two seasons of 13 episodes were produced. The title role played James Laurenson , whose cast (as a non-Aboriginal) caused some discussion. In the 1990s, the television film Bony: Drive to Death and the other, but short-lived television series Bony and his Commissioner followed .
In Germany, the original series was broadcast on ZDF and has not been repeated since.
Title character
The series is based on the character "Boney" (originally written "Bony"), who also played a role in dozens of novels by the writer Arthur W. Upfield from the late 1920s to 1964.
Napoleon Bonaparte, an Australian police inspector, has a historical name, but his friends only ever call him "Boney". He studied criminology at the University of Brisbane and is investigating murder cases that have already been filed as "unsolvable" and that take him across Australia. Boney is the son of a white and an Aboriginal , which makes him acceptable to both whites and Aborigines as one of their own.
In the second season (from episode 14), Boney receives support from police officer Alice McGorr in his cases.
Adaptations from the 1990s
In 1990, Bony was revived (now back in the original spelling) for a television film of the same name , which was followed by another television series in 1992 with Bony and his commissioner . The latter was criticized because Cameron Daddo, a white man, took over the title role.
Trivia
The music producer Frank Farian named one of his most successful projects Boney M. after this series, which he often saw on television at the time.
