Bonita Ely

Bonita Ely (* 1946 in Mildura ) is an Australian environmental artist.

life and work

Bonita Ely is a founding member of the Environmental Research Institute of Art (ERIA) and Head of Sculpture, Performance and Installation at the University of New South Wales . Ely has been dealing with the destruction of the environment for several decades. She is not only interested in ecological, but also in social, political and cultural contexts.

Her first important exhibitions were in London (1972) and at the Mildura Sculpture Trienniale (1975). Ely exhibits sculptures, photographs, paintings, videos, sound works and drawings. In 2017 she was a participant in documenta 14 .

The photo documentation The Murray River Project (1977) is an example of how Elys dealt with ecological issues.
