Bonny Island is a Nigerian island in the Gulf of Guinea that is important for oil production . The largest city is Bonny in the west of the island with about 17,700 inhabitants.
Bonny Island is located in the south of the state of Rivers , about 20 km southeast of the capital Port Harcourt , to which there is ferry service . In the early 1990s, the Nigerian government started the Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) oil production project in the area of the island in cooperation with international oil companies . On Bonny Island there are branches of Royal Dutch Shell , ExxonMobil , Chevron , Agip and Total, among others .
After the island, the part of the Gulf of Guinea that borders Nigeria and Cameroon is also called the Bight of Bonny .
